Case Study : Early Warning Scores As A Patient Safety Management Effort In The Inpatient Ward
-
Abstract
The deterioration of the patient's condition can increase the patient's mortality in the inpatient ward. One of the efforts that can be done to improve patient safety is implementation of early detection of patient deterioration using the Early Warning Score (EWS) instrument. The purpose of this case study is to describe the application of EWS as an early detection of patient deterioration in an inpatient ward. The case study was carried out on April 4th to 6th 2022 in the male inpatient ward by involving 5 patients who were taken based on the consecutive sampling technique. The results of this study indicate that 2 out of 5 respondents were declared dead when experiencing a decrease in physiological status as indicated by a high EWS score (red). The application of early detection of patients’ deterioration with EWS is considered to have advantages in predicting patient deterioration as signs of death in terms of the mortality rate of 2 patients managed (40%) with high EWS scores (red) on the day of death. The application of EWS is important for nurses in charge of care to make clinical decision and prevent patient deterioration and death.
